The Social Security Administration (SSA) has announced several key alterations to Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) for 2025. And at Mark W. Smith & Associates, we want you informed and prepared for any effects those changes might have.

This year’s updates are broad, affecting eligibility requirements, benefit amounts, and the application process. If you're currently receiving SSDI benefits or considering applying, it's crucial to understand how said may impact you. Below, you’ll find essential information to help you do exactly that!

1. Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Increase:

SSDI benefits increased by 2.5% to account for the rising cost of living.

2. Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) Limit Increase:

The SGA limit, which determines how much you can earn while still receiving SSDI benefits, has increased in 2025.

  • For non-blind individuals, the limit is $1,620 per month, while the limit for blind individuals may increase to $2,700 per month.
  • This change allows beneficiaries to earn more income without jeopardizing their benefits, potentially encouraging those who are able to explore work opportunities.

3. Changes to the Trial Work Period (TWP)

TWP is designed to help SSDI beneficiaries experiment with returning to work for nine months without the risk of benefit loss. In 2025, the TWI “threshold” has increased.

  • The new threshold is $1,100.

While the increase to COLA, the shifts in the TWI threshold, and other changes look good on paper, it’s important to understand how they might affect different aspects of your benefits. Our team is excited that a smoother application process and other factors might mean less painful waiting and a quicker return to meaningful work, but we know from experience how some benefits can be compromised when others are enhanced.

Bottom line? Don't hesitate to seek guidance from an experienced Social Security Disability advocate! Our team can help you navigate the complexities of the system, ensure you meet all requirements, and advocate for your rights along the way.
